The aviation industry is entering a new era in which climate change is becoming an increasingly important operational challenge. Rising temperatures, stronger storms and changing atmospheric conditions could mean more turbulence, flight diversions, delays and cancellations for passengers.

The warning is not simply about uncomfortable journeys. Researchers and aviation experts are increasingly examining how a warming atmosphere could affect everything from flight routes and airport infrastructure to aircraft performance and passenger safety. The World Meteorological Organization says more frequent extreme weather and hazardous conditions such as tropical cyclones and clear-air turbulence can disrupt airports and airspace, with effects spreading across wider aviation networks.

Why hotter skies matter for aviation

Aircraft are designed to operate across a wide range of temperatures, but extreme heat can create additional challenges, particularly during takeoff.

Hot air is less dense than cooler air. As temperatures rise, aircraft may require longer runway distances to achieve the necessary lift. In some circumstances, airlines can also face payload restrictions, meaning an aircraft may need to carry less fuel, cargo or passengers to operate safely.

Research into climate impacts on aviation identifies increased takeoff distances and potential payload reductions among the operational consequences of a warming climate.

That could become particularly important at airports where runway length is limited or where temperatures regularly reach extreme levels.

Turbulence could become a bigger concern

One of the most closely studied climate-related aviation risks is turbulence.

Clear-air turbulence is especially challenging because it can occur without visible clouds or obvious weather warnings. A major scientific study found that climate change can intensify several forms of upper-level turbulence, including clear-air, mountain-wave and near-cloud turbulence.

Another long-term study projected significant increases in severe clear-air turbulence across heavily travelled regions, including the North Atlantic, North Pacific and parts of North America and Europe.

More turbulence does not mean flying is becoming universally unsafe. Modern aircraft, pilots and air-traffic systems are equipped to manage turbulence. However, stronger or more frequent encounters can create additional challenges, including passenger and crew injuries, longer routes and increased fuel consumption.

Storms can create a chain reaction

Severe weather rarely affects only one flight.

A thunderstorm near a major airport can force aircraft to hold, reroute or divert. Once delays begin, they can spread through an airline's network as aircraft and crews arrive late for their next scheduled flights.

The WMO notes that climate-related weather hazards can produce wider "knock-on" effects beyond the location where the original disruption occurs.

Research from EUROCONTROL similarly highlights the operational risks created by changing storm patterns and flooding threats around airports. By mid-century, major storms could produce fewer overall delays in some European scenarios, but individual storm-related delays may become more severe when they occur.

Airports face their own climate challenge

The aircraft is only one part of the aviation system.

Airports depend on runways, terminals, fuel systems, electrical equipment, drainage networks and transport connections. Heavy rainfall, flooding, extreme heat, strong winds and storm surges can all threaten this infrastructure.

Coastal airports are particularly exposed to rising sea levels and storm surges. Researchers have warned that these risks could increase infrastructure costs and reduce airport capacity over time.

Airports are therefore investing in measures such as improved drainage, stronger infrastructure and better weather monitoring to increase resilience.

Airlines are adapting too

The aviation industry is not simply waiting for weather conditions to worsen.

Airlines and meteorological agencies are developing better forecasting systems to identify turbulence and severe weather earlier. The WMO's aviation research programs are focused on improving forecasts and helping airlines incorporate weather information into flight planning.

Technology could allow pilots and dispatchers to identify dangerous weather more accurately and adjust routes before aircraft encounter the worst conditions.

In the future, artificial intelligence, improved satellite observations and higher-resolution weather models could further improve this process.

What passengers may notice

For travelers, climate-related aviation disruption could become more noticeable in several ways:

  • More weather-related delays during extreme conditions
  • Additional flight rerouting around thunderstorms
  • More turbulence warnings and seat-belt restrictions

The bigger challenge for aviation

The industry's challenge is now twofold: aviation must reduce its contribution to climate change while simultaneously preparing for the effects of a changing climate.

A major review of aviation research found that climate change presents operational, infrastructure and economic risks, making adaptation increasingly important for the sector.

That means the future of flying may involve more sophisticated weather forecasting, climate-resistant airports, flexible flight planning and greater acceptance that some disruption is unavoidable when extreme weather threatens safety.

For passengers, the message may ultimately be simple: a delayed flight can be frustrating, but avoiding dangerous weather is part of making air travel safer in a changing climate.
