The devastating floods in Nepal have brought renewed attention to a growing danger across the Himalayan region: rapidly expanding glacial lakes.
A study by researchers at IIT Mandi has examined more than 2,000 glacial lakes in Himachal Pradesh and identified between nine and 12 lakes that could be classified as critical. The findings have raised fresh concerns about glacier melt, unstable mountain terrain and the potential threat of sudden glacial floods.
Himalayan Lakes Are Getting Bigger
Researchers found that several glacial lakes in Himachal Pradesh have expanded by approximately 30% to 60% over the past decade.
These changes are closely linked to glacier melting and broader environmental shifts in the Himalayan region. As glaciers retreat, meltwater can accumulate behind natural ice, rock or sediment barriers, creating lakes that may become increasingly unstable.
A sudden breach can produce what scientists call a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF)—a powerful release of water capable of damaging roads, bridges, villages and other infrastructure downstream.
Which Lakes Are Raising the Biggest Concerns?
According to the IIT Mandi research, Ghepan, Yoche and Kali Kund are among the lakes presenting the greatest potential risk because they are continuously changing and expanding.
The National Disaster Management Authority has separately identified four lakes requiring immediate attention: Ghepan Lake, Vasuki Lake, Kashang Lake and a lake near Baspa.
Researchers also noted that the risk is not determined only by the size of a lake. The location of downstream communities and infrastructure is an important factor when assessing potential consequences.
Climate Change Is Adding Pressure
Glacier melt is at the center of the concern, but researchers say several factors can interact.
Rising temperatures can accelerate glacier loss, while dust and pollution deposited on snow and ice can contribute to faster melting by increasing the absorption of solar energy.
Another concern is permafrost, permanently frozen ground that can become unstable as temperatures rise. Its thawing can weaken mountain slopes and potentially increase the risk of landslides and other hazards.
Nepal Floods Highlight the Regional Risk
The IIT Mandi findings have emerged as Nepal deals with a catastrophic flood disaster linked by scientists to a glacier collapse and landslide.
The event has intensified questions about how prepared Himalayan countries are for rapidly developing mountain hazards. A senior UN official has also warned that the Himalayan region faces increasing risks from glacial floods as climate change accelerates glacier melting.
Why Early-Warning Systems Matter
The biggest challenge is that many vulnerable lakes are located in remote, high-altitude terrain.
Monitoring lake levels, glacier movement and surrounding slopes can help authorities identify dangerous changes before they become emergencies. Early-warning systems can potentially provide downstream communities with valuable time to evacuate.
Himachal Pradesh has already identified dozens of vulnerable glacial lakes, with plans for early-warning systems at some of the highest-priority locations.
A Warning for the Future
The latest research does not mean that every identified lake will suddenly burst or cause a disaster. Instead, it highlights locations that deserve closer monitoring and risk assessment.
For the Himalayas, the message is increasingly clear: glacier loss, expanding lakes, unstable permafrost and growing development are creating a complicated climate-risk landscape.
The Nepal disaster has provided a stark reminder of how quickly mountain hazards can turn into humanitarian crises. For communities downstream of Himalayan glaciers, better monitoring, early warnings and climate-resilient infrastructure could become increasingly important in the years ahead.
