When an Avalanche Killed Climber Nirmal Purja, His Friends Faced the Hardest Mission of All

The mountaineering world was shaken to its core following the tragic death of legendary Nepali-British climber Nirmal "Nimsdai" Purja on Broad Peak in Pakistan. Struck by a catastrophic avalanche at 6,600 meters, the world-record holder and star of 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible lost his life alongside nine other expedition members. But in the harrowing hours following the impact, his closest friends, fellow Sherpa guides, and elite rescue teams faced their most heart-wrenching challenge yet: retrieving the body of the man who had redefined modern high-altitude climbing.

Operating in extreme Karakoram conditions at lethal altitudes, elite Nepalese and Pakistani search teams coordinated high-risk drone reconnaissance and helicopter missions to locate the fallen team.
