How a Schoolteacher's Son Became Kashmir's First India Test Cricketer

 

In the picturesque yet conflict-affected valleys of Kashmir, where opportunities in professional sports were once scarce, a young boy from a modest family dared to dream big. That boy was Parvez Rasool, who went on to become the first cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir to represent India in Test cricket, inspiring an entire generation of aspiring athletes. 

Humble Beginnings in Bijbehara

Born in Bijbehara, a small town in Anantnag district of Kashmir, Parvez Rasool grew up in a family that valued education and hard work. His father, a schoolteacher, encouraged discipline and perseverance, while also supporting his son's passion for cricket. In a region better known for political turmoil than sporting success, pursuing a cricket career was anything but easy. 

Cricket facilities were limited, quality grounds were scarce, and young players often had to travel long distances just to practice. Rasool frequently carried his cricket kit for hours and traveled to Srinagar for trials because proper training facilities were unavailable in his hometown.

Despite the challenges, Rasool's all-round abilities quickly attracted attention. A right-handed batsman and off-spin bowler, he consistently delivered outstanding performances in domestic cricket. His breakthrough came during the 2012–13 domestic season when he scored heavily with the bat and collected wickets regularly for Jammu & Kashmir. He amassed nearly 600 runs and claimed 33 wickets in a remarkable season. 

His performances demonstrated that cricketing talent could emerge from even the most overlooked corners of India.

The Historic India Call-Up

In July 2013, Rasool created history by becoming the first cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir to be selected for the Indian national team for the Zimbabwe tour. The news spread rapidly across Kashmir, where celebrations erupted as local residents recognized the significance of the achievement. 

For many young Kashmiris, Rasool's selection represented more than a sporting milestone—it symbolized hope and possibility.

Reaching the Test Arena

Rasool's journey reached another landmark when he made his Test debut for India, becoming the first player from Jammu and Kashmir to play Test cricket for the country.
